A Report on the 2017 District 201C2 Convention

 The Shining Stars Convention

FUNCTION CENTRE, The Highway, Plympton SA

At 9am on Friday Oct. 13th,

Most mobile members of the Edwardstown Lions Club gathered to prepare, Flags, Stage, Registration Desk, promotional displays, and conventioneers information bags for the convention. all organised by PDG Don Burge our Convention Chairman.

The opening ceremony, chaired by PCC Bill Holmes,  started at 7pm and after the formalities there was an opening speech by Adj. Assoc. Prof.  Annabel Digance MP. Then the Incoming, first lady, International President of Lions, all the way from Iceland, gave us a wonderful welcome to the Convention. How Privileged we were to have First Vice President Gudrun Bjort Yngvadottir  attend our  District Convention. The only one she attended while visiting Australia. Our own Club member, DG Judy and Lion Frank had already taken Lion Gudrun to visit the Hearing  Dog Centre, at Hahndorf, and to have afternoon tea wit Hugh Van Li, The Governor of SA, at Government House.

The Flag Ceremony followed, presenting flags from some of the countries where Lions are active, including of course the Flag of America where Lions was founded, of Australia and Iceland, the home of 1st Int. VP Gudrun. The Flags were paraded by Australian Airforce Cadets, Squadron 609.

The very moving Memorial Service was conducted by PDG Bob Radford, where we honoured Lions or partners who had passed away in the year since our last convention. Special mention was made of our own dear , much missed, Doug Omond OAM and PID Dr. Bob Coulthard AM, who instigated the Lions Eye Health Programmes all over the world.

The evening ended with a very melodious harmony entertainment from members of Voice of Transition, including, “Amazing Grace “ and “Allelulia” a favourite of DG Judy. Supper and fellowship followed.

Bright and Early on Saturday Oct 14th,

With PDG Don Burge as MC ,  DG Judy Chaired the I st Business Session.

We heard election speeches for District Governor. and 1st and 2nd VPs for 2018/2019

Lion David Snoook  OAM, Lion Tom Kimber, and Lion Norm Sommerville were duly elected to these positions.

PDG Brian Hearn was elected Trustee of the SA Lions Medical Research Foundation and the Lions Club of Mount Gambier won the right to run the 2019 C2 Convention.

Int. 1st VP Gudrun then presented the Int. Pres. Award to “Father Christmas” Cakes, Lion Tony Matthews.

Int. 1st VP Gudrun then gave a most amusing, inspiring address about her vision for Lions in the future, with a goal of 50 Million members!!!

To be so eloquent and amusing in a very different language to her own was amazing. She especially urged all new Lions to attend leadership training.

We then had a moving demonstration and video from the CEO of Hearing Dogs Lion David Horne.

After a very nice lunch served by the Staff of the Highway we again convened to listen to the most moving address by Mrs. Vikki Bedford on behalf of the Australian National Children’s  Cancer research Foundation. She has an on going Journey with her own little daughter’s battle with cancer.

Then followed the Notices of Motion

Details of the above contained in the Convention Book –All were carried

PCC David Skinner OAM then brought us a message from Multiple District.

Then we formally adopted the annual report of Lions Medical Research Foundation.

Saturday Evening Banquet

At 5pm the chairs were cleared away and the Highway staff put up the tables for the evenings banquet.

Jan and Dennis Chant , David and Sonja, helped Pam and Maurie Bennett decorate the tables with the fantastic Black and White decorations that Pam had designed and made. DG Judy had asked for the evening to have a Black and White theme and at 7pm most conventioneers came dressed in B and W.Most of the evening was informal and very enjoyable with entertainment by the Groove Brothers and Soul Sister. Before dinner Annabel Dignance MP gave a most eloquent toast to Lions International and PID Dr. Jon Bjarni Porsteinsson (husband of Int.1VP Gudrun) gave a superb amusing response, once again in his second or third language, especially mentioning his friendship with the recently mourned PID Dr. Bob.

The raffle was drawn, with the BBQ won by Lion Chris Woodrup, and results were announced for silent Auctions.

The meal was excellent and a good evening was enjoyed by all.

Sunday 15th Oct

With difficulty we convened at 8.45am to first listen to a presentation by Orange SKY laundry , Mobile Vans designed to provide clothes washing for the homeless and in disaster situations. They now have 19 vans in several Cities in Australia. CEO Lisa Sprlyan was very inspiring, and of course this project very much compliments our Sleeping Rough Programme.

PCC David Skinner OAM then told us about the origins of Lions International in America, making a purple thread of friendship throughout the world.

We then enjoyed Morning Tea followed by a very amusing and robust  Q and A session,

 chaired by PDG Bob Korotcoff.

The members from Darwin promoted their Convention, next year in Exotic Darwin.

DG Judy formally moved the closing of the Convention and PDG Don Burge oversaw the handing over of the Flags from the Edwardstown Convention Committee to the Lions from Darwin and then closed the proceedings.

We then enjoyed Lunch, helped clean up and with the glad relief that all had gone well made our way HOME

Many thanks to all concerned especially, PDG Don Burge.
